HISTORY
Brancott Estate has been pushing the boundaries of winemaking innovation since it was founded in the south of Auckland under the name Montana in 1961.
A pioneering approach to vineyard development resulted in the company planting the first commercial vines in Gisborne and later Marlborough. A defining moment in the brand’s evolution occurred in the mid 1970s when it grew the first Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc at Brancott Estate.
It was a decision that went against popular opinion of the time that suggested the South Island was too cold to grow wine grapes. But it turned out to be an inspired move.
The very first vintage of Sauvignon Blanc was an award winner, spawning great interest in the region and the potential for this new wine style.
Another important milestone in the company’s growth occurred in 2010 when the Montana name was replaced in favour of Brancott Estate, in recognition of the original roots of the company. The focus remains firmly on the highest quality wines and the brand’s unique Marlborough origins.
KNOW-HOW
Brancott Estate's wine-producing know-how blends traditional techniques with advanced technologies. This combination enables it to produce a range of refined and fruity wines from several varietals.
The company takes full advantage of the dry, sunny climate and long cool nights in the Marlborough region – ideal for the slow maturation of grapes – to capture intense flavours with a touch of acidity.
Brancott Estate is particularly committed to protecting the environment. In 1995, the company supported the creation of a movement for sustainable viticulture, known today as Sustainable Winegrowing New Zealand (SWNZ).
