HISTORY
Campo Viejo has a long and proud history stretching back to 1959 when Beristain and Ortigüela, two talented Rioja winemakers, joined forces.
Their exceptional drive and passion for making quality wines was widely appreciated by consumers, then recognised by professionals globally, and by the 1970s they had turned Campo Viejo into the leading Rioja wine brand. Their initial overseas sales in 1975 were a first for the Rioja region and triggered an export program that now includes 70 countries.
When the Campo Viejo Gran Reserva won gold at Vinexpo in 1987, it marked another significant milestone in the brand’s growing reputation.
To keep pace with international demand, a new state-of-the-art winery was built in 2001 which enabled Campo Viejo to combine traditional wine-producing processes with the very latest techniques.
Built partly underground, the award-winning winery was designed in line with the company’s strong commitment to sustainability and environmental protection.
In 2010 Campo Viejo received the prestigious Impact Hot Prospect Brand award for its performance in the United States, highlighting its potential for further growth over coming years.
Today, Campo Viejo is the leading brand of the Rioja appellation in global markets.
KNOW-HOW
Campo Viejo has remained true to its philosophy of creating surprising, expressive and elaborate wines while striving to maintain strong ties with Rioja’s history and land.
Wines from the Campo Viejo range represent the vibrant essence of the Rioja region. Grapes are grown in a mountain environment and benefit from a wide variety of climates and soil types. The vineyards produce the four traditional varieties of red grapes – Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano and Mazuelo –, as well as premium quality white grapes which are used in the portfolio.
Tempranillo is Rioja's flagship varietal and the backbone of classic Rioja blends. Campo Viejo's portfolio of red whiles include 85% to 100% Tempranillo - demonstrating our commitment to this famous and iconic grape of the region.
Campo Viejo's winemakers blend the selection of grapes with each varietal vinified separately in order to highlight its unique character and achieve the most expressive wines.
