Pernod Ricard limits the amount of energy used in its operations: electricity, gas, fuel and coal, in particular.
The Group’s total energy consumption dropped from 2,049GWh in 2006-2007 to 1,550GWh in 2007-2008.
The primary sources of energy consumption are the Group’s distilleries. Each year, they have improved their energy efficiency by an average of 6.9%. Since 2003, Pernod Ricard has recorded an average annual energy performance improvement rate of 3% (total energy consumption per litre of finished product).
The Group’s goal is to reduce its energy consumption by 10% more per product unit by 2011.
These results are a testament to the efforts led by Pernod Ricard to limit the amount of energy used by the Group, in particular electricity, gas, fuel and coal consumption.
INVESTING IN GREATER ENERGY EFFICIENCY
Controlling energy use is a high priority for the entire Group. It is associated with efforts to reduce both ecological and financial costs. The Group’s objective is to consume as little energy as possible.
An extensive boiler and distillery modernisation programme
• The fermentation yield for the plant in Walkerville, Canada, was increased in order to optimise the operation of its distillery. Over five years, the quantity of steam consumed per litre of alcohol decreased from 10kg to 6.5kg, a 35% improvement.
• In 2006-2007, the combustion control systems for two boilers at the Midleton distillery in Ireland were replaced. A third boiler is scheduled to undergo a similar operation. Improvements have also been made to the evaporators and dryers.
• In Scotland, the distillery in Strathclyde led a programme similar to the one at Midleton. It can now produce 11% more whisky while maintaining the same energy consumption as in 2006-2007. The resulting natural gas savings amount to a reduction of 5,800 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.
• A large number of the Group’s facilities have led similar programmes to those mentioned above, for example the Corby site in Canada, where a high-performance boiler was installed.
Diverse solutions implemented in the workplace
• In the Czech Republic, at the Bohatice facility, replacement of the heating system resulted in a 20% reduction in gas consumption, a saving of around 300MW per hour.
• The plant in Walkerville, Canada, now heats its buildings with hot water recovered from the distillery. In addition, all of the offices are equipped with energy-saving light bulbs.
