End of last year, the Villa Vassilieff welcomed Japanese artist, Koki Tanaka, as 2017 Pernod Ricard Fellow.
For his residency, Tanaka decided to highlight the value of everyday life. He invited artists, curators, researchers, philosophers, educators, and more to partake in perhaps the most mundane of chores, like watering plants and cooking; the goal being to render Villa Vassilieff into a sort of 'permanence' that underscores the details of quotidian life. Tanaka also organised dinner clubs to pay tribute to Russian artist, Marie Vassilieff, who offered shelter to poor neighbours and artists. A true Créateur de Convivialité!
La Permanence
Transplanting basil seedlings, waxing the wooden stairs, discussing an exhibition while cooking, planning a program of events, taking care of an artwork, paying an invoice, cleaning the bar... All these are essential activities in an institution, but that remain invisible, concealed, even devalued. With La Permanence, Koki Tanaka (2017 Pernod Ricard Fellow) chose to put the daily life and work of the team back at the center of the public life of Villa Vassilieff.
