Brancott Vineyard, site of the first Sauvignon Blanc plantings in Marlborough, New Zealand and home of Brancott Estate, is now the home of a permanent installation by New York-based designer, Dror Benshetrit.
Titled Under/standing, the 8metre high Cor-Ten steel sculpture is made of 52 interlocking pieces, and reflects the geometry of the vineyard and is his interpretation of the Brancott Estate winemaking philosophy and commitment to innovation.
The unveiling of Under/standing is the culmination of a two-year collaboration, and followed Dror's first visit to Brancott Estate in 2014 when he was inspired by the role Brancott Estate played in establishing Marlborough globally, as well as the winemaking philosophy of chief winemaker Patrick Materman.
"After visiting Brancott Estate and meeting Patrick, I was struck by the level of care and detail that goes into a single bottle of wine'from the cultivation of the vines and harvesting of the grapes through to the fermentation, blending and bottling," explains Dror. "I wanted to encapsulate that detailed process in a design that both responded to the landscape and symbolised the vineyard's ongoing transformation."
Chief Winemaker Patrick Materman said: "Watching the installation come to life and showcasing the team's hard work in front of an appreciative audience made me very proud. We always talk about how we do things differently and this project has really demonstrated that. It has been exciting to work on a different project and to see so many of the team come together to bring it to fruition."
In addition to the installation and the creation of a wine rack, titled Present¸ the collaboration has also initiated a limited-edition wine range, titled Reflection. The Reflection range includes a Sauvignon Blanc/Sauvignon Gris 2016 blend and a Pinot Noir 2015. The packaging for the range is designed by Dror to reflect Under/standing.
Under/standing is now open to the public as a Brancott Estate Cellar Door & Restaurant offering, along with the limited-edition Reflection wines and Present wine racks available to purchase.
